Hey there guys and girls! I’m Kiwi, the main instructor of Barskolan London and I’m going to be using this blog to keep you guys up to date with what is happening at the Barskolan London and also what’ new in the world of cocktails and alcohol in general!
First of all I’d like to introduce myself! My name is David Turnbull but everyone calls me Kiwi (I hope this is because I am from New Zealand but maybe I remind my friends of the fruit, who knows?). I’m from a small city called Nelson, and I moved from New Zealand to London about 4 years ago. I’ve been a cocktail bartender and bar manager in a couple of different countries including New Zealand, the UK, and also Canada where I spent most of last year.
I’ve been working with Barskolan London for about 6 months now and it has been amazing! I have been lucky enough to have some really great students coming and I have really enjoyed teaching them all about the spirits and how to make cocktails, and by the end of the course the cocktails they have been making and inventing have been really great! But it’s not all study either, I’ve have also had some great days practicing flair with our bar students in Hyde Park, attending the Bar exhibitions and going to some of the great Bars and nightclubs that we have here in London.
I like almost all types of drinks and cocktails and love trying to find new ingredients and recipes to try out but if I had to decide my specialties (and favourites!) spirits are probably gin, rum and Tequila!
As part of this blog I am going to try and give some fun and interesting cocktail recipes to try for yourself, and since this is my first blog post I thought I’d show you a ‘Kiwi’ cocktail!
Kiwi Collins
This is a kiwi fruit version of the famous ‘Collins’ style of cocktails, so the ingredients we will need are:
Half of a kiwifruit (without the skin)
50ml Gin or Vodka
25ml fresh lime juice
10ml gomme (sugar syrup)
Soda water.
Method:
In a Boston glass muddle half a kiwi fruit with the fresh lime juice and sugar syrup and Vodka/gin. Add some ice and shake hard, and then strain into a Collins/Highball glass filled with ice. Top with soda water and garnish with kiwi fruit slices and you have a Kiwi Collins!
Well that’s it for now, I hope you all have a good week and if you have any questions about the Barskolan London or just London in general feel free to to ask them in the comments section and I’ll try and answer them for you!
